AI receptionist or just voicemail?

Voicemail is free, simple and already on your phone. An AI receptionist answers the call, gives the caller an answer, and can book. The right choice depends on how many calls you miss and how much each one is worth.

Where voicemail is the better choice

  • It costs nothing and needs no setup.
  • It is the simplest thing that can work, with few parts to fail.
  • Call audio stays with your carrier instead of passing through AI providers.
  • If you rarely miss calls, and nothing you miss is urgent, it may be all you need.

Where an AI receptionist is the better choice

  • The caller gets an answer and can book while they are still on the line.
  • An emergency call is recognised and acted on, instead of waiting in a mailbox.
  • Messages arrive as a short summary with a callback button, not an audio file to listen to.
Example, not a quote

Example: what one missed job can cost

An average HVAC service call is worth about $250 to $500 in revenue (market research, Oct 2026).

Example only: suppose you miss 10 calls a month and 2 of those callers would have booked. At $350 a job, that is $700 a month.

Your numbers will differ. Count your own missed calls before you decide.

The 10 calls, 2 bookings and $350 are assumptions chosen to show the arithmetic. They are not measured results.

How to choose

An AI receptionist is likely to fit if

  • You miss calls while you are on a job, and some of those callers hang up.
  • You want to book jobs, not collect messages.
  • An emergency call reaching an empty mailbox would be a real problem for your trade.

Voicemail is likely to fit if

  • You answer nearly every call yourself.
  • The calls you miss are low value, or never urgent.
  • You want zero cost and zero setup, and you are comfortable calling people back.

Common questions

Can I use both?

Yes. Forward only no-answer, busy or after-hours calls to Ringwise, and keep voicemail as your own fallback for anything you decide not to forward.

How many of my missed calls would turn into jobs?

We do not know for your shop, and we will not guess. Count your missed calls for a few weeks and your own booking rate. The missed-call calculator on the home page lets you try your own numbers.

We compare kinds of solutions, not named companies, and offerings vary a lot within each kind. Figures marked as market research come from our own research notes dated October 2026. Examples are labelled as such and use assumed numbers. Last reviewed Oct 13, 2026.
